Roots Germania
Documentary, 52 and 76 minutes, 16:9
Year of production: 2007
Director: Mo Asumang
Produced by: MA Motion
Versions: English, German
Mo`s journey started when she first heard the song that called for her murder: “This bullet is for you, Mo Asumang” was sung by the Neonazi band “White Aryan Rebels”. Instead of hiding Mo was driven by her desire to overcome her fears and to find out where this hate against Migrants and where racism comes from.
She is the first black German journalist who meets Neonazis for a documentary. She takes the audience into a German prison where she meets a young Neonazi, then she meets face to face with one of Germanys Neonazi leaders and dares to enter a Nazi rally and is surrounded by 3000 Neonazis. But that’s only the beginning.
An intimate look into her own family history shows how deep racism had already touched the lives of her German mother and Ghanaian father.
On her search for identity, Mo even follows the advice of the Neonazis to “Go back to where you came from!”, only to find out that in Ghana, where she meets with her father, Mo is seen as a white person.
Roots Germania is a risky road movie between questioning pseudo Germanic ideas of right wing populists and finding ones own identity. With humour and persistence Mo Asumang is opening up her life in this film. A remarkable piece.
